Do Mushroom Vapes Contain THC? THC-Free Mushroom Vapes Explained

Some do and some don't, and the packaging rarely makes it obvious. A true mushroom vape contains an extract of Amanita muscaria, whose active compound is muscimol, and no cannabinoids at all. But a growing share of "mushroom" disposables are blends that pair mushroom extract with hemp-derived THCA, delta-8 or THC-P, and those absolutely contain THC. The ingredient panel settles it, not the front of the box.

What is in a mushroom vape that has no THC?

Start with what the mushroom part actually is. It is not psilocybin. Psilocybin mushrooms are Schedule I and can't be sold legally, so the "magic mushroom" vapes on smoke shop shelves use Amanita muscaria, the red-capped fly agaric.

The FDA's September 2024 scientific memorandum on Amanita muscaria names three active constituents: muscimol, ibotenic acid and muscarine. Muscimol is "a potent agonist of GABAA receptors," the same receptor family that alcohol and prescription sedatives act on. Ibotenic acid works on glutamate receptors and is partly converted to muscimol by heat. Neither is a cannabinoid, and neither touches the CB1 receptor that THC binds.

A THC-free mushroom vape, then, is muscimol (sometimes with ibotenic acid) dissolved in a carrier such as propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin, plus flavoring. That's the entire recipe. No hemp. No cannabinoids.

Which mushroom vapes do contain THC?

Blends. And they're common, because THC sells and a mushroom name on the box is a marketing hook.

Look for any of these on the ingredient list or lab report: THCA, THC-A, delta-8, delta-9, D8, D9, THC-P, HHC, "hemp-derived cannabinoids," "live resin" or "distillate." Any one of them means the device contains a tetrahydrocannabinol. A "muscimol and THCA disposable" is a THC product with a mushroom extract added, not the other way round, and once it's heated the THCA becomes delta-9 THC.

Two things follow. That blend can fail a marijuana drug test, because heated THCA becomes delta-9 THC, and delta-9's metabolite is exactly what the federal testing panel looks for. Muscimol isn't on that panel. THC is. And it's regulated under hemp law, not mushroom law, which matters a great deal this year.

Elyxr's explainer on what a mushroom vape pen actually contains shows what a muscimol-only formulation looks like on paper, which makes the blends easier to spot by contrast.

A "no THC" claim is only as good as the certificate of analysis behind it. If the lab report shows muscimol but no cannabinoid panel, the claim is untested rather than proven. If it shows a cannabinoid panel with non-detect results, you have your answer.

Are THC-free mushroom vapes legal?

At the federal level, yes, in the narrow sense. The FDA memo states that "A. muscaria and its constituents are not scheduled as controlled substances in the United States," in contrast to psilocybin. Louisiana is the one state that restricts Amanita muscaria outright, under Act 159 of 2005, except for ornamental use.

But "not scheduled" isn't the same as "approved." The same FDA memo concludes there is no basis to consider Amanita muscaria or its constituents GRAS in food, and none of them are approved drugs. A muscimol vape sits in a regulatory gap: not a controlled substance, not a sanctioned food ingredient, and not an approved product. Elyxr sells legal mushroom products with lab reports attached, and that documentation is the only real accountability mechanism the category has.

The THC blends live under a different and shifting rulebook. Hemp-derived cannabinoids have been legal federally since the 2018 Farm Bill measured hemp by delta-9 THC alone. A November 2025 law redefines hemp by total THC and caps finished products at 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container, with most provisions taking effect December 11, 2026 after a one-month delay signed on September 2, 2026. A mushroom and THCA blend will not survive that definition.

Which type should a buyer expect?

Honest answer: whichever the label says, and the label needs reading twice.

If the goal is to avoid THC entirely, for a drug test, a workplace policy or a personal preference, the product needs a cannabinoid panel on its lab report showing non-detect, not just a muscimol number. If THC is the point, then the "mushroom" in the name is mostly flavor text, and the product should be judged as a THC disposable: cannabinoid percentages, residual solvents, hardware quality and the December 2026 deadline.

Adults 21 and over only, either way. And since muscimol acts on GABA-A receptors, combining a mushroom vape with alcohol or sedatives is the risk that stands out most, THC or not.

FAQ’s

Do mushroom vapes get you high like THC?

No. Muscimol acts on GABA-A receptors rather than the cannabinoid receptor THC uses, so its effects (the FDA memo lists disorientation, fatigue and altered perception) are not THC high. Blends that add THCA or delta-8 produce a THC effect because of the added cannabinoid, not the mushroom.

Will a mushroom vape show up on a drug test?

A muscimol-only vape won't trigger any standard panel; muscimol isn't tested for. A mushroom vape blended with THCA, delta-8 or THC-P will produce the same THC metabolite as cannabis and can fail a marijuana test.

Are mushroom vapes psilocybin?

No. Psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance and cannot be sold legally. Mushroom vapes use Amanita muscaria extract, whose active compound is muscimol, which is not federally scheduled.
