HYROX and World Triathlon Agree New Framework for Hybrid Racing
Hybrid Racing will become a recognised World Triathlon discipline under a partnership with HYROX, establishing three race formats and a championship framework. Olympic and Paralympic inclusion remains a long-term ambition, not a confirmed outcome.

HYROX and World Triathlon have signed a term sheet for a strategic partnership that brings Hybrid Racing into the international federation’s recognised disciplines. The agreement sets out a framework for championships, three competition formats and a shared ambition to reach the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
For athletes training for HYROX or other hybrid races, the significance is a more formal competitive structure around running and functional fitness. It is not, however, confirmation of Olympic inclusion or a complete set of new race rules. A further agreement will define how the partnership operates.
Who will run the championships?
World Triathlon, the international federation responsible for triathlon and multisport, will sanction and govern all three Hybrid Racing formats. It will develop them jointly with HYROX, the functional fitness racing series.
HYROX will exclusively operate the official World, Continental and National Championships for elite athletes in the Ultimate format. Those championships will sit within its existing elite competition structure. National Federations will have opportunities to organise events across all three formats, including National Championships for age-group competitors.
The deal follows a year of collaboration. World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany described the partnership as a way for federations to increase participation, reach different audiences and strengthen the wider sport.
HYROX Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Christian Toetzke presented it as progress towards the organisation’s ambition to build a standardised international sport. Fellow Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer Moritz Fürste emphasised the community’s contribution to HYROX’s development and the prospect of future athletes pursuing Olympic competition.
Ultimate, Fast and Ultra: the three formats
- Ultimate: a format matching the existing HYROX competition model. This is the format covered by HYROX’s exclusive role operating the official elite championships.
- Fast: a shorter version with greater intensity, offering a different competition format within the same recognised discipline.
- Ultra: a longer, endurance-focused version, extending the range of racing covered by the partnership.
For athletes, the important distinction is that the familiar HYROX model sits within a broader three-format structure. Ultimate provides the direct connection to existing HYROX competition, while Fast and Ultra introduce shorter and longer alternatives.
The announcement does not supply distances, workout specifications or launch schedules for those alternatives. That limits what athletes can translate into a training plan now: there is a clear direction for the formats, but not enough detail to build race-specific preparation for Fast or Ultra from this announcement alone. Their names and broad descriptions should not be treated as finished race briefings.
What this means for your next racing goals
The partnership reaches beyond elite racing. World Triathlon says its network of more than 177 members will have a route into Hybrid Racing, with opportunities to develop participation from grassroots level upwards. For age-group athletes, the provision for federation-organised National Championships is a particularly relevant part of the agreement.
That creates scope for more structured competition opportunities, but it is not yet a published race calendar. The announcement does not set out entry requirements, qualification procedures or individual national event plans. Athletes considering a future championship target will need those details before making specific commitments.
Both organisations also intend to pursue inclusion in Multi-Sport Games, with Olympic and Paralympic participation as the ultimate objective. Those are ambitions rather than secured places on a Games programme.
The next formal step is a Long Form Agreement covering the operational, governance and commercial arrangements. For now, the practical takeaway is recognition and an agreed framework for development—not an announced overhaul of your next HYROX race or an instruction to change your current training.
